Our Bits can Drill anything that is softer than their unique Carbide, Cobalt, and Titanium tip. Which is most things. The bits will not be able to drill out the tip of diamond burr bits and some solid carbide drill bits/end mills. That said, some materials that are harder to drill than others. Porcelain tile in particular requires a very sharp drill bit to drill efficiently. We recommend purchasing our Diamond Sharpening Wheel and honing up your bit regularly if you often need to drill very hard materials.
It depends on what material you are planning on drilling through. The harder the material the faster the edge will dull. But, good news! They’re Guaranteed For Life! If you dull or damage a bit send it back to our shop (24 Broadcommon rd, Bristol, RI) and we sharpen/replace it for Life!
Our bits look like a masonry bit because they were originally designed to drill rebar reinforced concrete. We found that if you can drill rebar and concrete you can drill just about anything else with the same bit. The tip is the key difference, it's not just carbide, like a regular masonry bit, it's carbide, cobalt, and titanium. The tip is designed to be more durable than a carbide tip and hold an edge like a cobalt bit. They are then braised into a armor steel shank at 2700 degrees which means that a Bad Dog Multipurpose Bit can get blue hot in an insulating material like wood without the tip seperating form the shank. Finally the armor shank is significantly more durable that the shank of a masonry bit, its designed to flex rather that snapoff in a hole.
The number problem customers have with our drill bits its Not Spinning them Fast enough. For our Bits to work correctly speed is key. They must be going at a minimum of 2500 RPM. The tip has a less aggressive cutting angle than a traditional drill bit so if you spin them at the speed you would spin a traditional drill bit they won’t make anywhere near as much progress and could appear to not be working at all. When in doubt, put our multipurpose bits in an impact gun and run them flat out. For material-specific recommendations please see our How-To pages.
With our bits speed is critical. We recommend any drill that will spin ATLEAST 2500 RPM Impact: Our bits come with a hex end allowing you to snap it right into your impact gun for high rpm drilling. Battery/corded drill: Put your bit into a regular battery-operated or corded drill. Just make sure the drill can reach a minimum of 2500 rpm. Drill Press: When drilling tough materials it’s best to put our Bad Dog Bit into a drill press to reach the high speeds that allow our bit to work best!
When drilling at high speeds low melting point metals such as aluminum to bind to the tip of the bit. To keep this from happening we recommend that you apply some Bad Dog Wax before and during the job.
