The New Bit for Drilling Sheet Metal We've Been Thinking About for 38 Years.
For a company that has sold the idea of a one-bit solution to drilling, introducing a second style of Drill Bit might seem like, well, sacrilege. But hear us out. Drilling sheet metal is not only about getting through the material – it’s about getting through the material quickly and not distorting it in the process. This is where the new SMBits really shine! Need a 3/8” Hole? Drill a 3/8” hole with no distortion and very little burring on the backside of the workpiece. And, just like our other tools, we’ve designed it to tackle multiple materials so you can drill stainless, plastic, wood, brass and aluminum with one bit. And, of course, it’s GUARANTEED FOR LIFE!
SMBits are made from super hard, super sharp cobalt with a multistep tip that starts quickly on hard surfaces, but mitigates burr on the back side. The shanks have a quick connect, impact gun compatible, hex end that won't slip.
14 piece set includes QC Hex Shank 3/32”, 1/8”, 5/32”, 3/16”, 7/32”, 1/4”, 9/32”, 5/16”, 11/32”, 3/8”, 13/32”, 7/16”,15/32”,1/2” and Metal Index. POWERTOOL/DRILL NOT INCLUDED.
Ensure that work piece is securely held prior to drilling.
Sheet Metals including Stainless Steel, Mild Steel, Aluminum, Brass plus Plastics, Wood, Laminate, and Solid Surface.
Concrete, Stone, or any other kind of masonary will dull our Sheet Metal Bits immediately. Very hard steel such as tool steel or carbide cannot be drill because they are harder than the cutting surface of the bits. Glass. If you need to drill any of these materials consider our Multi-Purpose Drill Bits.
It depends on what material you are planning on drilling through. The harder the material, the faster the edge will dull. If you use a cutting lubricant such as Bad Dog Drool, and make sure to keep the rpm and pressure low, you'll get a longer life too. But, good news! They’re Guaranteed For Life! If you dull or damage a bit send it back to our shop (24 Broadcommon rd, Bristol, RI) and we sharpen/replace it for Life!
Yes! Unlike our Multi-Purpose Drill Bits we strongly recommend using cutting oil or wax (like our Bad Dog Dried Drool) with your Sheet Metal Bits. It will speed up your drilling and keep your bits sharper, longer.
Use low speed ~ 600 RPM and light pressure. This is just about the sweet spot for most cordless drills. Each bit has a quick connect Hex End and can be used in an Impact Gun, but be aware that impact guns opperate at a much higher speed ~ 3000 RPM. When using Sheet Metal Bits in an impact gun control your speed by partially pulling or feathering the trigger. Also be sure to prevent the impact mode from kicking in by only using light pressure.
We love quick connect hex ends, they make changing bits quick and conventient in an impact gun and prevent slipping in a traditional drill ~ we wouldnt make a bit without them! But be aware that impact guns opperate at a much higher speed ~ 3000 RPM than a traditional drill. Sheet Metal Bits should be spinning much slower ~ 600 RPM. When using Sheet Metal Bits in an impact gun control your speed by partially pulling or feathering the trigger. Many modern impact guns come with an adjustable speed setting, that should always be set to the lowest setting. Also be sure to prevent the impact mode from kicking in by only using light pressure when drilling.
Dull or damage our tools and we will repair or replace them.
